Emerging from the awareness to enhance Islamic values, identity, and understanding among Malaysian students in North America, the Malaysian Islamic Study Group (MISG) was founded in Peoria, Illinois in 1976. The main objective of its establishment was to counter the challenges faced by Malaysian students in North America. Beginning in 1990, Muslim students from Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia have become involved in the activities of MISG and benefited from its activities. Later, in order to suit their needs, a new organization, namely the Indonesian Muslim Student Association (IMSA) was established on December 29, 1998, in Jefferson City, Missouri at MISG annual convention. Since then, both organizations have worked jointly to achieve common priorities in strengthening morality and developing da’wah activities for Indonesian and Malaysian Muslims in North America.
